In 2007, the Gallery acquired 120 outstanding German drawings from the collection assembled by Wolfgang Ratjen (1943–1997). All of the drawings are presented in this exhibition, which includes rare examples by Hans von Aachen and Adam Elsheimer; studies for soaring religious ceilings and alterpieces by some of the greatest South German artists, such as Cosmas Damian Asam and Matthäus Günther; new visions of landscape in watercolors by Johann Georg von Dillis and Caspar David Friedrich; architectural designs by Karl Schinkel and Rudolf von Alt; and an exciting group of realist works by Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann. A parallel exhibition of eighty-two Gallery drawings from the same period demonstrates how these two collections balance and reinforce each other to give an outstanding view of German art through the centuries.
