Writing was independently invented in five areas of the ancient world, including Mesoamerica. Of these, the Maya glyphic system stands out for its creation of syllabic and pictorial writing. John Hessler, curator of the Jay I. Kislak Collection, will discuss this priceless literary cultural heritage as preserved on vessels in the exhibition.
