Museum curator and author Alcione M. Amos will lecture on the history of Barry Farm/Hillsdale, a settlement created by the Freedmen’s Bureau in 1867 to deal with the housing problems faced by African Americans in Washington, DC after the Civil War. This community’s little-known history mirrors the broad arc of African American history, but is also a fascinating and significant piece of local DC history.
