Orange Grove Dance
Orange Grove Dance, under the direction of Colette Krogol and Matt Reeves, transforms the stage with its trademark virtuosic athleticism and evocative multimedia design. In the world premiere of Children of Babel, they explore the mythopoetic themes that transpire due to an impactful shift in one’s life. How do you prepare in twenty minutes to leave your home forever? Using a multi-lingual cast, the work is informed by the varying rhythms, phrasing, idioms, and poetry that each performer’s language offers. The stage, filled with vintage radios and tape recorders, becomes a lush and interactive sonic environment. Using personal stories, individualized movement vocabularies, and dynamic partnering techniques, the choreography runs from powerful, heartbreaking, and bombastic to virtuosic and vulnerable. As the performers are displaced and separated through a projection-driven landscape, audiences are left to contemplate how you hold onto the past when you can’t take anything with you.
