The “Empress of the Unexpected,” as dubbed by NPR, has reinvented herself yet again. Known for her razor-sharp wit and versatility, Werner’s most recent record ventures down to the Big Easy with a piano-driven romp titled NOLA. Werner says she studied the works of Dr. John and sought guidance from Preservation Hall trombonist David L. Harris while crafting this New Orleans-inspired record. This is exciting new territory for an acclaimed artist who has written a Broadway score and a range of folk, jazz, and pop tunes over her 20-year career. Raves No Depression, “When it comes to crafting a song, Ms. Werner’s only peers are Jimmy Webb and Paul Simon.”

Opening the show is Heather Aubrey Lloyd. Lloyd, who took home the 2019 Bernard/Ebb Songwriting Awards Grand Prize, is a former reporter, who’s songs drift from journalistic to deeply personal. Each narrative is offered up in her passionate alto and layered over finger-picked guitar or hand percussion, her primary instrument for almost two decades with Baltimore’s ilyAIMY. She’s toured as a solo artist backing Dar Williams, and earned numerous awards including 2017 Telluride Troubadour Top 4, 2018 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Most Wanted Artist, 2018 National Women’s Music Festival emerging artist, and was a finalist for the 2018 No Depression/Freshgrass Award.
